With Sergey Brin, worked out at Stanford that the web's link structure was a ranking signal, wrote PageRank around the insight, and built Google on it. His mother Gloria, whose family came to New York from Brest-Litovsk, is Jewish; he was raised without religion, in a house where, as he put it, the religion was technology.
