An American actor who led the Dead End Kids and their successor troupes, the East Side Kids and The Bowery Boys, through decades of low-budget films built around street-tough New York characters. His comic trademark was the confident, garbled malapropism — announcing "I depreciate it!" instead of "I appreciate it!" — a verbal tic that became the signature joke of the entire series.
