Leo Penn
American director
1921 – 1998aged 77
Leo Penn spent the 1950s locked out of Hollywood after refusing to name names before the House Un-American Activities Committee -- Paramount tore up his contract and CBS pushed him out over an anonymous accusation -- so he rebuilt a career behind the camera instead, directing episodes of Star Trek, Columbo, and Magnum, P.I. across three decades of television. He and his wife, actress Eileen Ryan, raised three sons who became performers in their own right: Sean, Chris, and Michael Penn.
