Leon Fleisher

American conductor and pianist

1928 – 2020aged 92

A concert pianist celebrated for his recordings of the Brahms and Beethoven concertos with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra, he lost the use of his right hand in 1964 to a neurological condition later diagnosed as focal dystonia. Rather than stop performing, he turned to the left-hand repertoire, premiering Hindemith's Klaviermusik decades later with the Berlin Philharmonic, and eventually regained enough control to play two-handed works again. He taught for over sixty years at Baltimore's Peabody Institute and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2007.
