Born Lesley Goldstein, she had a US number-one hit with "It's My Party" at sixteen, then followed it with the more defiant "You Don't Own Me" — a song she considered her signature and one that outlasted the girl-group era it came from as an early statement of female independence. She later turned to songwriting, co-composing the Oscar-nominated "Out Here on My Own" for Fame (1980) with her brother Michael Gore, and hosted the LGBT-focused public television series In the Life in the 2000s.
