Lamport won the 2013 Turing Award for bringing mathematical rigor to distributed computing, devising algorithms and formal verification methods that let engineers reason precisely about systems built from many independent, communicating computers — work that underlies the reliability of modern networked software. He is also the author of LaTeX, the document preparation system used by mathematicians and scientists worldwide to typeset their work.
