Israel's third prime minister, who took office in 1963 after David Ben-Gurion's resignation and led the country through the 1967 Six-Day War. He ended military rule over Israeli Arab citizens shortly after taking office and became the first Israeli leader formally invited to the White House, building a relationship with Lyndon Johnson that shaped US-Israel relations for years afterward. Long before politics, he had founded the Mekorot national water company and helped build the Histadrut labor federation and the Haganah defense organization during the Mandate era.
