Arrived in Gold Rush San Francisco as a Bavarian immigrant selling dry goods to miners. In 1873 he and the tailor Jacob Davis patented the idea of riveting the stress points on work trousers — the patent that turned a piece of workwear into the most widely worn garment on earth.
