Louis Kahn
Estonian-American architect
1901 – 1974aged 73
Born Itze-Leib Schmuilowsky in Estonia, Kahn became one of twentieth-century architecture's most influential teachers and builders, developing a monumental style that let a building's weight and materials show rather than hiding them. He taught at Yale and then at Penn from 1957 until his death, and was awarded both the AIA and RIBA Gold Medals; at his death he was considered by some "America's foremost living architect".
