Malvina Reynolds

American folk singer

1900 – 1978aged 77

A folk singer-songwriter and political activist who didn't start writing songs in earnest until midlife, Reynolds turned a sharp eye on postwar American conformity in "Little Boxes," its title now shorthand for tract-house sameness, and wrote environmental concern into pop culture early with "What Have They Done to the Rain." "Morningtown Ride" became a children's-music standard covered for generations after her.
