Marc Benioff founded Salesforce in 1999, pioneering the then-radical idea that business software could be rented over the internet rather than installed on a company's own servers — the "software as a service" model that reshaped how companies buy technology. He built Salesforce's "1-1-1" philanthropy model, committing 1% of the company's equity, product and employee time to charitable causes, a template later adopted by thousands of other companies. In 2018 he and his wife Lynne bought Time magazine.
