Margaret Hodge

A British Labour politician, born to German Jewish parents who fled the Nazis, who served as a member of Parliament for Barking from 1994 to 2024 and chaired the Public Accounts Committee from 2010 to 2015, using the post to press hard on corporate tax avoidance. As leader of Islington council in the 1980s she later apologized for failing to adequately investigate allegations of child abuse in council-run homes, a public reckoning she did not avoid. She was made a life peer in 2024.
