Marilyn Monroe

1926 – 1962aged 36

The most photographed woman of the twentieth century, and a far better comic actress than she was allowed to be — Some Like It Hot and The Seven Year Itch survive on timing that looks effortless and was not. She fought the studio system for control of her own contracts and won, forming her own production company in 1955 when actresses were expected to be property. She converted to Judaism in 1956 before marrying Arthur Miller, studying with a Reform rabbi; Egypt banned her films in response.
