A film director nominated for an Academy Award for On Golden Pond (1981), whose other directing credits — The Fox, The Reivers, Cinderella Liberty, The Rose — moved between literary adaptation, character drama, and the story of a self-destructive rock star loosely inspired by Janis Joplin. His work across four decades favored actors' performances over spectacle, drawing some of the era's strongest dramatic turns onto screen.
