The author of 88 books, Martin Gilbert built his reputation as Winston Churchill's official biographer, spending decades mining archives most historians never see. He turned that same rigor toward Jewish history, producing landmark studies of the Holocaust that helped establish the documentary record later scholars relied on. Late in life he served on the Chilcot Inquiry into Britain's role in the Iraq War, applying the same forensic instinct for primary sources to a very different kind of reckoning. He was knighted for his work.
