A documentary filmmaker who has repeatedly put a camera inside situations most journalists can't reach: Cartel Land (2015) followed vigilante groups fighting drug cartels on both sides of the US-Mexico border and earned an Academy Award nomination, while The First Wave (2021) embedded inside a New York hospital during the opening months of COVID-19 and won Best Documentary at the News and Documentary Emmys. He founded his production company, Our Time Projects, in 2009.
