Portrait of Max Scheler

Max Scheler

German philosopher

1874 – 1928aged 53

Max Scheler took the phenomenological method Edmund Husserl had built for studying consciousness and turned it toward ethics and human nature, arguing that values could be grasped directly through feeling rather than derived from reason alone. His work in philosophical anthropology and value theory influenced a generation of European thinkers; after his death in 1928, Martin Heidegger called him the strongest philosophical force in contemporary Germany and Europe.
