Known as the Tzemach Tzedek, he led the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic movement as its third Rebbe for over three decades and was one of the leading legal decisors of 19th-century Judaism. His rulings on Jewish law carried weight across the Hasidic world well beyond his own community, and Chabad still studies his writings as foundational texts.
