Born Eugene Orowitz, he became one of the defining faces of American television, playing Little Joe Cartwright on Bonanza, Charles Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie, and Jonathan Smith on Highway to Heaven across three decades — writing and directing many of the episodes himself. He appeared on the cover of TV Guide twenty-two times, second only to Lucille Ball.
