Michael Löwy
French sociologist
b. 1938age 88Living
Michael Löwy built a career at the intersection of Marxist theory and religious thought, writing books that traced connections between figures as different as Karl Marx, Che Guevara, Franz Kafka, and liberation theology's radical priests. A research director at France's CNRS and longtime lecturer at the EHESS in Paris, he received the CNRS Silver Medal in 1994 for scholarship that treated revolutionary politics and spiritual conviction as subjects worth reading together rather than apart.
