Michael Mann built a body of stylized, meticulously researched crime dramas — Thief, Manhunter, Heat, The Insider, Collateral — that helped define how contemporary Hollywood shoots urban night and criminal procedure alike. Heat's extended bank-heist shootout through downtown Los Angeles remains a reference point for the genre. Mann also created and executive-produced Miami Vice for television in the 1980s, later adapting it into a 2006 feature film, and has continued directing into his eighties with Ferrari (2023). His work has earned two Primetime Emmys, four Academy Award nominations and a BAFTA for producing The Aviator.
