Michael Showalter
American actor, comedian, and filmmaker
b. 1970age 56Living
Michael Showalter went from cult sketch comedy — MTV's The State, then the summer-camp send-up Wet Hot American Summer, which he co-created and starred in — to acclaimed serious filmmaking, directing The Big Sick, a wry account of Kumail Nanjiani's real-life romance and hospitalization, and The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which won Jessica Chastain an Academy Award. Both films kept the comic instincts of his sketch background while taking their subjects, and their real people, seriously rather than as targets.
