Mierle Laderman Ukeles

American artist

b. c. 1939Living

A conceptual artist who redirected the language of feminist and service-oriented art toward the unglamorous work that keeps a city running. Since 1977 she has served as the unsalaried artist-in-residence of the New York City Department of Sanitation, a role through which she turned maintenance labor — cleaning, hauling, upkeep — into the subject of civic art rather than its invisible background.
