Born Igor Mikhail Peschkowsky, Mike Nichols left Germany with his family as a child and became, decades later, one of a small number of people to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. He started as half of the improv duo Nichols and May before turning to directing, winning Tony Awards for Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple and a revival of Death of a Salesman, and later moving into film.
