Miklós Rózsa
Hungarian-American composer
1907 – 1995aged 88
A Hungarian composer who lived what he called a "double life" — writing serious concert works championed by violinists Jascha Heifetz and Gregor Piatigorsky, while also becoming one of Hollywood's most in-demand film composers. Brought to Los Angeles when production of The Thief of Bagdad moved there during the war, he went on to score nearly 100 films and earned 17 Academy Award nominations, winning three times, for Spellbound, A Double Life, and Ben-Hur, whose sweeping score became one of his signature works.
