Argued that inflation is a monetary phenomenon and that central banks, not unions or oil sheikhs, are responsible for it — a position that went from heresy to orthodoxy inside twenty years. Nobel Prize in Economics, 1976. Son of Hungarian Jewish immigrants to Brooklyn, and among the most consequential and most argued-with economists of the century.
