Mitchell Parish

American lyricist

1900 – 1993aged 92

A lyricist called "the poet laureate of the profession" by fellow songwriters, who wrote the words to Stardust (1927), Sweet Lorraine, Stars Fell on Alabama, Deep Purple, and Sleigh Ride — songs whose lyrics have outlasted the era of Tin Pan Alley that produced them and remain standards of the American popular songbook. His romantic, image-driven style set a benchmark for what a lyric could do independent of its melody.
