Moishe Postone
American historian, Thomas E. Donnelley Professor of Mode
1942 – 2018aged 75
Moishe Postone spent his career reworking Karl Marx's critique of political economy, arguing in his 1993 book Time, Labor, and Social Domination that Marxism had misread capitalism's core problem — not class exploitation over property, but an impersonal domination built into labor and value themselves. He taught history at the University of Chicago and extended the same framework to modern antisemitism, describing it, controversially, as a distorted, fetishized form of anticapitalism that mistakes abstract economic forces for a scheming group of people.
