Moritz Moszkowski

German composer, pianist and teacher

1854 – 1925aged 70

A composer and pianist whose fluency for the keyboard drew praise from Ignacy Paderewski, who ranked him second only to Chopin in understanding how to write for piano. Moszkowski was a major figure in German-Polish musical life in the late nineteenth century, teaching a generation of pianists and composing across the instrument's full technical range. His brother Alexander was a well-known satirist in Berlin. Though his concert-hall fame faded after his death, his piano works remain part of the standard teaching repertoire today.
