Moses Finley

American-born British academic and classical scholar

1912 – 1986aged 74

A classicist whose 1973 book The Ancient Economy argued that antiquity's economy ran on status and civic custom rather than modern rational self-interest, reshaping how historians read ancient Greece and Rome. Investigated by a U.S. Senate subcommittee during the McCarthy-era Red Scare of the 1950s, he relocated to England, where he was later knighted and became master of Darwin College, Cambridge.
