Born in Jerusalem, she was cast in Léon at twelve and published a chemistry paper in a peer-reviewed journal as a Harvard undergraduate, having said she would rather be smart than be a movie star. Won the Academy Award for Black Swan, directed an adaptation of Amos Oz's A Tale of Love and Darkness in Hebrew, and has been notably willing to say unpopular things about Israeli politics from a position where silence would have been easier.
