Norman Granz
American jazz musician and producer
1918 – 2001aged 83
A jazz producer and promoter who founded the Jazz at the Philharmonic concert series and the Clef, Norgran, Verve, and Pablo record labels, building much of the commercial and institutional infrastructure that let jazz musicians tour and record on their own terms. He used his position as a promoter to insist on integrated audiences at his concerts in the segregated South, treating the fight against racial exclusion as inseparable from the music itself.
