An Israeli Knesset member representing the Communist Party within the Hadash coalition, Cassif has built his career around civil rights and labor legislation, chairing the higher-education subcommittee and sponsoring occupational-safety law. His wartime criticism of Israeli conduct in Gaza and his 2024 public backing of South Africa's genocide case at the International Court of Justice drew a Knesset expulsion attempt that failed, along with separate multi-month suspensions from the chamber for his remarks.
