Osip Mandelstam
Russian poet and essayist
1891 – 1938aged 47
Osip Mandelstam was one of the leading poets of the Acmeist movement, writing precise, densely allusive verse that stood apart from the grand abstractions surrounding it in Russian poetry. He was arrested during the political repressions of the 1930s and sent into internal exile with his wife, Nadezhda Mandelstam; a second arrest in 1938 sent him to a labor camp in the Soviet Far East, where he died that year at a transit camp near Vladivostok.
