Pat Smear co-founded the Los Angeles punk band Germs, a foundational act of the late-1970s scene, before becoming Nirvana's touring guitarist during the band's final year. He joined Foo Fighters in 1994, left after their first two albums, and returned in 2010 as a full member, giving him a hand in three distinct eras of American rock.
