Paul Goodman
American writer and public intellectual
1911 – 1972aged 60
A public intellectual whose 1960 book of social criticism, Growing Up Absurd, argued that American society gave young men no meaningful work worth growing into, and helped make him known as "the philosopher of the New Left." He co-developed the theory behind Gestalt therapy, wrote prolifically across poetry, fiction, and political anarchism, and lost several jobs for his open bisexuality and his draft resistance during the Second World War — costs he treated as the price of writing and living without compromise.
