Played Victor Laszlo opposite Bogart and Bergman in Casablanca (1942), the role most audiences remember him for, after building a stage and film career in German-language productions in Austria. He fled to Britain and then the United States as a refugee from Nazi Germany, and after the war was blacklisted by the House Committee on Un-American Activities, working mainly in independent films and in Europe until he returned to Hollywood in 1954.
