Paul L. Smith built a long career out of playing imposing villains, from the sadistic prison guard Hamidou in Midnight Express to Bluto in Robert Altman's Popeye and the brutal Rabban in David Lynch's Dune. Burly and bearded, he became one of the era's reliable go-to heavies, working steadily in film and television from the 1960s into the 2000s as an American-Israeli character actor.
