Paul Lukas
Hungarian-American actor
1894 – 1971aged 77
A Hungarian stage and screen actor who built his career in both Budapest and Hollywood, Lukas won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Watch on the Rhine in 1943, playing an anti-Nazi resistance figure he had originated on Broadway. The role also brought him the first Golden Globe ever given for Best Actor in a drama, along with a Photoplay Award and the New York Film Critics Circle prize — a rare sweep for a performance carried from stage to screen.
