An economist who ran two of the federal government's most consequential numbers shops: director of the Congressional Budget Office, then of the Office of Management and Budget under Barack Obama, where he was a lead architect of the Affordable Care Act's financing. He later became chairman and CEO of Lazard, one of the world's oldest investment banks, and sits on the board of the Institute for Advanced Study.
