Peter Shaffer
English playwright and screenwriter
1926 – 2016aged 90
An English playwright whose two best-known works, Equus and Amadeus, each won him the Tony Award for Best Play by taking outsized psychological subjects — a stable boy's violent breakdown, Salieri's obsession with Mozart's genius — and staging them with theatrical spectacle rather than realism. He adapted both for the screen himself; his Amadeus screenplay won the Academy Award and a Golden Globe.
