Phil Ochs

American protest singer and songwriter

1940 – 1976aged 35

A protest singer-songwriter who wrote roughly 200 songs addressing the Vietnam War, civil rights, and labor politics, performing at the 1968 Democratic National Convention and other major demonstrations of the decade. Songs like "I Ain't Marching Anymore" and "There but for Fortune" made him one of the era's sharpest musical chroniclers of American dissent, though his output slowed in the 1970s as he struggled with bipolar disorder and alcoholism; he died by suicide in 1976.
