Rebecca Schaeffer was a rising television actress, starring in the CBS comedy My Sister Sam, when she was murdered at 21 by an obsessed fan who had tracked her down through a private investigator using DMV records. Her death led directly to California passing the country's first anti-stalking law and restricting public access to DMV records, a legislative legacy that outlasted her brief career.
