Born Aaron Chwatt, Red Buttons built his early career on a hit self-titled variety show before reinventing himself as a dramatic actor, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Sayonara in 1957. He went on to steady character work in films including The Longest Day and The Poseidon Adventure, while keeping a stand-up career alive through his signature "Never Got a Dinner" routine.
