Rehavam Ze'evi

Israeli politician, Minister of Tourism

1926 – 2001aged 75

Rehavam Ze'evi rose to brigadier-general in the Israel Defense Forces before entering politics, where he founded the far-right Moledet party on a platform advocating the transfer of the Palestinian population out of the occupied territories — a policy widely condemned as a call for ethnic cleansing. As a cabinet minister, he was assassinated in 2001 by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, in retaliation for Israel's killing of the group's secretary-general, becoming the first Israeli minister assassinated in office.
