Richard Rodgers
American composer of songs and Broadway musicals
1902 – 1979aged 77
With 43 Broadway musicals and more than 900 songs, Richard Rodgers was one of the defining composers of American musical theater across two distinct partnerships — first with lyricist Lorenz Hart on shows like Pal Joey and On Your Toes, then with Oscar Hammerstein II on Oklahoma!, Carousel, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. The Rodgers and Hammerstein collaborations reoriented Broadway around character and story rather than spectacle alone. He was the first person to win all five of America's major entertainment and arts prizes — the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony, and Pulitzer Prize.
