Risë Stevens

Risë Stevens spent more than two decades as a leading mezzo-soprano at the Metropolitan Opera, becoming the definitive Carmen of her era from her 1938 debut through the 1950s. She later ran the Met's National Company as its director from 1963 to 1968, shaping the next generation of American opera rather than only performing in it.
