Originated Fagin in the 1960 London stage production of Oliver! and reprised the role in the 1968 film, earning a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for a performance that became the definitive screen Fagin. He returned to the part in West End and Broadway revivals through the 1980s, and worked with Mel Brooks on The Twelve Chairs.
