S. Z. Sakall, born Jakab Grünwald in Hungary, became one of Hollywood's most reliable character actors after emigrating to the United States, playing the head waiter Carl in Casablanca (1942) and supporting roles in Christmas in Connecticut and In the Good Old Summertime. Studio boss Jack Warner nicknamed him 'Cuddles' for the warmth he brought to every part, and critics still single out his brief scenes in Casablanca as some of the film's most memorable.
