Saadia Gaon

rabbi, translator, Jewish philosopher and theologian acti

882 – 942aged 60

A ninth-century rabbi and philosopher whose Book of Beliefs and Opinions was the first systematic attempt to fuse Jewish theology with the tools of Greek philosophy, a project that shaped how later Jewish thinkers approached questions of reason and faith. Saadia was also the first major rabbinic figure to write extensively in Judeo-Arabic, producing foundational work in Hebrew linguistics and biblical exegesis. He spent much of his career defending rabbinic Judaism against the rival Karaite movement, becoming one of the defining scholars of the geonic period.
